Basic BJD Photography Tips

One of the best things about owning a BJD that you got from a BJD Shop is doing photo shoots with them. You get to try out different things with your BJD as if you actually have your very own model! But what are the things that you have to remember when practicing photography with your BJD?

  • Try to take pictures in a shaded area. Since BJDs are mostly made of resin, it would be greatly advisable to take pictures of your dolls in a shaded area where there is natural light. You can take pictures of them in a park or just outside your porch.
  • Make sure they’re dress the way you want them. It’s not about how expensive your BJD clothes are or how pricey they actually are. What’s important is how you style them up. Style them up according to your photo shoot’s theme.
  • Pose them up! Make sure that they look natural. So try to pose them the way you imagine a human would pose. Try to cover their  back necks as much as possible to give them a much more natural look. Try to stay away from taking their pictures from below as well because it doesn’t really register well in the camera. Most BJD hobbyists who takes pictures of their dolls usually pose them with their necks slightly tilted on the side which sometimes give their dolls a mischievous look.
  • Know your doll’s angle. Before you finally take photos of them, make sure to know your doll’s angles. We all know that dolls are made to look perfect. But most dolls have certain angles that makes them look apart from other sculpts. You may try to take some test shots at first to see what your doll’s best angle is.
  • Take that shot! If you’re using a snap and shot camera, you might want to change the setting into macro. This will give you an almost bokeh effect on your shots. You may even use your camera’s phone to take a shot. Take pictures of them outside or to a place where there is natural light to give it a more deeper and creative shot. If you are using a DSLR, you might want to play with your camera’s settings a bit so that you can use your camera’s full potential.
  • Make sure to change your doll’s wardrobe after. Dark clothes usually leaves stains on your doll if left for long. So it would be better to change your doll’s clothes with a much lighter one after. This is prevent the doll’s clothes from staining your doll. Some wigs also leaves stain your doll’s head cap so make sure to remove it from time to time. You may clean your doll by using a magic block to remove the stains.

These are just some of the tips that you may want to consider when taking photographs of your dolls. You don’t need an expensive camera when taking pictures of them. All you need is the right creativity to create poses and just make them come alive.
